Application of heat therapy is a standard practice in medicine for the treatment of common ailments such as arthritis, bursitis, headache, back and neck pain, menstrual cramps, fibromyalgia and muscle soreness. Warmth is associated with tranquility and relaxation. Heating injured tissue has been used for centuries for pain relief and reduction of muscle spasm. In physical rehabilitation, locally applied heat agents are used, not only to promote relaxation and pain relief, but also to increase blood flow, to facilitate tissue healing, and to prepare stiff joints and tight muscles for exercise.
Likewise cold therapy is a standard practice in medicine for the treatment of strains, sprains, headache and muscle spasms. Cold agents are used as first-aid measures after trauma and as adjunctive tools in rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular dysfunctions. Cryotherapy (the use of cold as a therapeutic agent) is an age-old remedy for pain relief, fever reduction, and control of bleeding and, more recently, has been applied to prevent or reduce edema of traumatic origin and inflammation, decrease muscle-guarding spasms, and temporarily diminish spasticity before exercise.
Using of cold has also special importance for storing and transporting of medico-biological objects for different purposes; preservation of blood and its preparations, preservation of tissues and organs used for transplantation, mother milk, genetic preparations, medicines and so on.
There are numerous thermal agents available for tissue heating or cooling. Hot packs and cold packs are one of the most widely used agents that are available to achieve the common goal of increasing or reducing tissue temperature. Cold packs can also be used as an appropriate modality for storing and transporting of medico-biological objects.
Three different sizes of cold/hot packs formulated and designed in Polymeric Biomaterials Laboratory in Iran Polymer & Petrochemical Institute are available as samples presented below.
Standard Size Cold/Hot Pack Neck Cold/Hot Pack Eye Cold/Hot Pack
In use, the pack would be put into a freezer or other chilling device for use as a cold compress or would be put into hot water or microwave on low setting to be used as a hot compress.
