AREA OF INTEREST

The main present fields of research at our department are focused on polymeric biomaterials design and preparation, biopolymers used as scaffold for tissue engineering ,  morphological studies of the polymer surfaces, analysis of polymer blends and copolymers as well . Laser induced surface modification of polymers to improve biocompatibility is the other current activities in our department. We have applied FT-IR, ATR-FT-IR, UV-visible laser beam, x-ray diffraction measurements, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray analysis and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) , surface charge measurements ( zeta potential) and  surface tensiometry to characterize the bulk and surface properties of  biomaterials. We are interested in drug delivery systems using biodegradable polymers specially injectable implant delivery system, as in situ forming for release of drugs/agents  including radioisotopes ( local cancer therapy), corticosteroide and contraceptive drugs. Another our research efforts are centered on the development of a better understanding of blood and tissue/material interactions as they relate to implantable devices and biomaterials. Studies currently ongoing include evaluation of the biocompatibility of polymeric biomaterials using in vivo and in vitro assays as well as tissue engineering for bone,  cartilage and skin regeneration  to study the cellular and humeral responses to implanted materials and /or cell seeded onto biodegradable biomaterials. We have introduced a novel technique to create blood compatible materials and investigating human blood/material interaction, protein adsorption, cellular components, coagulation parameters platelet adhesion and activation. Laser-induced copolymerization of acrylated monomers onto the surface of polymers to achieve the new biomaterials generation is the other efforts. We are designed  a special artificial skin using biodegradable biopolymers/polymers. Finally, a biopolymer-biomaterial adhesive for prevention of the blood oozing is one of our recent achievements. The completed/current research at our department are summarized as the following:
